Essay (unissued)
The original “Salnave essay” is perforated and was printed in yellow on white paper by the German printer Giesecke & Devrient, Leipzig. Quickly labeled as bogus issue or “une carotte” in the philatelic press it is actually possible that this was an official order since the stamps were available direct from Haiti (American Journal of Philately, Dec. 1868, page 81). However, they were never released and must be regarded as essays at best. Later whole sheets were sold with bogus cancels (Kohl: Briefmarken-Handbuch, 11th ed.: page 249).Facsimiles

The forgeries below are based on an illustration that appeared e.g. on page 66 of the September 15, 1868 issue of Le timbre-poste (Brussels), and on page 153 of the October 1, 1868 issue of The Stamp-Collector’s Magazine (London/Bath). Unlike with the original essay and the other forgeries, the Phrygian cap incorrectly points to the right.
