In July 1993, the Haitian postal service released a set of five stamps and one souvenir sheet to commemorate the 500th Anniversary of the Discovery of the Americas by Christopher Columbus.  The set immediately became popular with thematic collectors, including the souvenir sheet of which just 1,000 were issued.
