  Sinking of the La Crete-a-Pierrot

In September 1943, as the Second World War continued to rage, authorities released a set of eight stamps for regular and airmail usage.  The issue commemorated an event involving the La Crete-a-Pierrot during Haiti's civil war in 1902.  Admiral Hammerton Killick and crew had intercepted a German arms shipment bound for Haiti.  The German government demanded an apology - a demand carried to Haiti by the Kaiser's warship Panther.  Killick, on board the La Crete-a-Pierrot, sent his crew ashore, then rejected the ultimatum.  As the Panther opened fired, Killick blew up his ship and sank with it, rather than give up control to the German navy.
