Pres. Pierre Nord Alexis 1904-1920
Recess printed by E. Côte, Paris. Line perf. around (≥) 14, or around (≤) 13½.
Within the basic stamp set one can distinguish between the issued stamps, which can be found on covers and with overprints perforated about 14 or 13½, and numerous reprints also featuring various other perforations including compound. In principle, all of them were produced with plates created from the same engraved master dies, which makes original printings and reprints very difficult or even impossible to distinguish – with two exceptions: there are four easily identifiable reprints, two each of the 1c and 50c value. The various values of the original set and the 1c and 50c reprints can be characterized by a combination of three key features:The vignette … The printer’s name below left numeral … The trumpet … either has the shading lines right of the head attached to the neck
(original 1c and 50c, reprints type 1 of 1c and 50c)or there is a gap between head and shading lines
(2c, 5c, 10c, 20c, reprints type 2 of 1c and 50c).is either reading “E‑COTE” with hyphen and in large, seriffed letters
(original 1c)or is reading “E COTE” without hyphen and in somewhat smaller, unseriffed letters
(all other values and reprints).either penetrates the motto banner “L’UNION FAIT LA FORCE” almost touching the “A” in “FAIT”
(original 50c)or its end is cut off below to stay clear of the banner
(all other values and reprints).‘POSTE PAYÉ’ Overprint (1904)
